What i am doing after ITT

Postby sevenalive » July 14th, 2008, 6:07 pm

Since about 5 years ago i have been programming, first in VB, then in Java, now in C#. Coming from my experience, ITT does not teach you much when it comes to programming. Its very basic and students come out of the class not knowing how to do 90% of real world applications or even how to use the language. But then again, it is my personal belief that you should already know if your a programmer. Since most programmers in the field learned what they know on their own (like me), some don't have degrees (or they got them later on), but they do have years of experience.

Anyway, ITT didn't teach me 1 thing when it comes to programming, NOT 1 single thing.
For a while i didn't program because of ITT, but i since got back my desire.

Things i been working on / done:
Seven Update - Easy and Advanced Update & Install system, Open source, mimics windows update vista interface.
http://sevenupdate.sourceforge.net

Pipeline - Advanced Backup and Data synchronization tool - Its been a year since i did anything to this, i will completely rewrite and add new features after i get the Seven Update SDK done.
http://pipeline.sourceforge.net

Seven MODX Installer - This automates the install process of doing mods on phpbb3 (what this site runs on)
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=1062905

Countdown - This one is cool, when it's ran it will lock your machine showing a black screen and a yellow timer. It will countdown, the user had to enter a code to get it to (give more time, or stop), if it eachs < 50 seconds, cool dramatic music plays, < 5 seconds "24" clock beeps. At 0, the computer will shutdown! I did this to stan, it was hilarious, he couldn't figure out how to shut it off (lol noob), he must of started that machine 50 times, he got so pissed. The code was "stop". Pressing Alt-F4 will cut the timer in 1/2 (if that option is set).
I will update this one soon with better code and a few tweaks.

I have more, but those are my most notable. I also did a 24 screensaver back in 05, that played the intro + "previously on 24 video", then it showed the episode recap. When you stopped it, it will exit with the 24 clock and it beeps. I stopped development on this because nobody uses screensavers.
If you don't like it, MOD IT!

In all honesty, if you know how to code decently in almost any language you don't need an education to get a high paying job. If you lived in my area you'd be making atleast $40k/year with the knowledge/experience you say you have. Hell, even the Craigslist freelancers I've spoken with around here make a killing off of a few projects a month.

Once I got an LCD I stopped using screen savers. They always kick in at the worst time during a movie.

I work at a warehouse.

My skills are:
Networking (Nothing too advanced, mainly home networks)
Visual Basic.Net (Visual basic since I was eight, I'm 23 now. When .NET came out I was twitter patted)
C# (Ever since Visual Studio 2005, I needed a game making language that was easy to use and fast to compile.)
A small bit of C++ (Not enough to really matter, a few GUIs and some basic tools. Hate the long compile times XD)
HTML - Everyone wants a website, not many can use style sheets.
PHP - Where HTML fail, PHP succeeds. 2 years hobby.
JAVA - Where PHP fails, Java succeeds. 2 years hobby.

I hate it when people list MS office and Linux as their skills. Really, that isn't even a skill now days.
So far I've directly stopped 16 people from attending ITT.
16 x 45,000 = 720,000
God only knows how many they've stopped.
