Cool! a board about minimum wage services!

Postby MSTie1 » April 24th, 2008, 12:16 pm

Yea so I've met with career services on more than one occasion. I figured even tho I have my resume on every job site imaginable what could it hurt to have career services on my side. Well apparently even they don't have faith in the students in getting jobs. Posters for UPS,security guards, etc all up in the hallways. But I figured maybe they had like the career specific jobs in the career services offices. To my surprise there were some IT jobs, but part time, $10/hr, no requirements needed, type of IT jobs. On-call jobs that required you to work all hours, and of which didn't care that you were in school, wanted you to come in then too. And then they plead with you..."how bad do you want a job?" and offer you something that is $8/hr. Yea I do want a job, but I'd rather not drive an hr to it and back, and end up paying them so I can work there. WTF?

LOL, did you happen to read our article on the ITT Tech Jobfair. Its on the blog. http://ittakestime.org or look for the blog link in the general section of the forums.

Career Services is like an employment agency for employment agencies. They just direct you to Career posting sites like monster. You ought to see my thread called Job Postings.

Yea I did read that. I couldn't believe that it was the same at another campus! I had just kind of hoped that maybe we were in a poor IT job area or that our career services was lazy. Makes me even more depressed now. :/

Just joined, I love the site.

But yeah, every time I went to Career Services and asked for an internship or anything, I always got "Well the Target down the street is hiring!"

There's no need to descend on everybody on this message board just so you can say you have the contrary side. Since you posted in this thread I originally started I figured I'd clarify more for you. Our career services has all the jobs they have openings for on a big whiteboard in their office, this is what I was referring to when I said they offered horrible jobs. They frequently send out emails for different jobs not posted that are just as bad. I was already searching for jobs on my own and figured I would just use them as "backup." They of course have been no help so I've resorted to searching on my own again. I'm not a slacker, I'm disappointed in ITT because I had hoped I would be getting more from the teachers, real world experience, things not said in books, etc. I'm three quarters away from graduating, with a 4.0 GPA/CNS, and I can't say that I've learned $40,000 worth. Of course I'm putting into as much as I can, I'm trying to suck something I didn't know from this school, but regardless of what I learn here, it's not worth the exorbitant tuition they charge.

Btw, it is the schools fault for the job fair since they did put it together, they should screen employers and jobs.

The director of placement at my campus was not a nice person; she interferred in my bussiness too much. There used to be be nice people who wer down to earth therebut it seems like the nice ones leave and the snotty ones are left behind.

What I lvoed most about their fairs were the ones where they brought in perspective students to show them all of the different degree programs. They did one of these when I was a student. The instructor told us that we all had to show up and tell perspective students about the great education we were getting at ITT Tech. This was a requirement for a test grade! No joke! I was the only one stupid enough to show up, so I got an A on that test! What was so funny was that our project for the quarter was to build a robot in that class. We all just talked and played on the computer the entire time. The instructor tinkered with the robot sometimes, but by the end of the quarter it unsurprisingly didn't work. He said that wasn't our fault, so gave us all an A for the class. Some education.
