Group Work

Tired of listening to your instructor tell stories about his daily visit to a perfume store? Wonder when your going to get a "hands on" approach?

Group Work

Postby MSTie1 » June 27th, 2008, 12:53 am

Okay, I understand that not everybody going to ITT is really dedicated to technology or anything, but why do I always get stuck in groups with these people? In a group for the IT321 class (cisco routers and things) and this one dude in my group is always sleeping, and this other guy is always gaming on his laptop. The other people are basically clueless about the material but at least they put some work behind it to figure it out eventually. The teacher is taking the stand of "you'll end up in groups like that in the business world." Which is no doubt true but more things can be done with them I would think, in school the losers just get a free ride. It's just frustrating, I'm sure it's like that at real colleges too but it seems like the teachers at ITT are complete weenies about it. Start giving those people Fs, put them in a group with a bunch of other losers, etc. Grr!

That's the kind of students ITT attracts, they are usually the people who didn't give a shit about grades in high school and got by with D's.

But it also could be the fact that they were "Trained" to do this. They know they still will pass and the teacher's won't do anything, so they just fuck around in class. Then they get accustomed to it, why bother spending your money or showing up if your just going to play games on your laptop? Well people do. On the other hand i managed to do my homework while fucking around. In that web authoring class where that fuck head of a teacher didn't do shit, i played age of empires 2 during lab. I still turned in the classwork though. When you go to ITT, your going to get lazy, not just while your there but everything. It took me some time after i got out to readjust to normalcy. i actually can't wait for the fall semester to get here, so i can get back to doing what i left off back in Dec. 05.

I can attest that you'll find these same people doing the same thing in other schools. I have seen my share at my ITT campus but they all seem to be in the EET program or whatever the Electrical Engineering is. At my campus I've only met 4 other CNS students and luckily 3 of them really care about their grades and performance.

I'm only in my second semester, but I've made to observations thus far regarding groups:
1) No teacher has assigned groups for our group projects, we get to choose our teams and the slackers tend to stick together luckily.
2) Group projects are by far the most helpful part of my courses, the invaluable networking is worth it.

AOE2? That brings memories back. When I went to ITT I stayed alert the whole time. Now at UC (Moved campuses, so I'm going to say UC now ^-^ yeay me) we have deathmatches during chemistry. It's hilarious,

Me: Crap, what was the in to cm conv
D1: **** we just got owned, kayot take their tank
Me: On it
D2: its 2.54
D1: wtf?
Me: Got tank, need hlp plz
D1: omw
Me: ty D2
D2: no prob, could you get off my tank?
Me: zomg your blue. die scum

Something like that, if I can keep up with chem and a UT deathmatch I'm good. That and my brother and I swap notes. (Both on honors in a class where lesser people are easily weeded out)

As for lazy and dumb people, I had to work with a few. Probably the best grades they had. If it wasn't for the online courses, I would have pass a hell of a lot higher than I did. 3.08 isn't enough to brag about.
So far I've directly stopped 16 people from attending ITT.
16 x 45,000 = 720,000
God only knows how many they've stopped.

As far a getting lazy, ITT does make you lazy. I went to a pretty tough high school where you had to pay attention and work hard for good grades. I started attending ITT and found it so easy that I could fall asleep or whatever and still pass with flying colors. I wouldn't have to study for tests or anything whereas in high school I could spend two hours a night working on homework and studying.

But as far as the group work topic goes I agree to whats been said. For my capstone project we split up in two groups and the teacher just said ok this half of the room is one group and the other half is another group. I got stuck with a bad group of people. I was the only one who showed up every week to do the project and if they did show up all they did was complain about their personal life and how screwed up they are. We did finish the project but everybody else was throwing their stuff together the last minute while I was sitting there prepared. I don't know what grade they received but it better not have been an A. The teacher said you get graded as a group and individually so who knows.

That sounds kind of like the ITT I unfortunately attended. You didn't have to do anything to get by...now THAT'S education for the future!!!

By the way, as an ITT Tech grad, I like to sit at home and eat cheese sandwiches. I also like to be quiet after 10 PM on a daily basis since I live in my parents garage.
