Lied about having student loans

Postby oxymoreon » March 24th, 2010, 3:01 am

I enrolled at ITT and started taking online classes
last summer. I was told that it was all covered by finical aid and there
would be no out of pocket costs. After starting my 3rd quarter I was fed
up with their program and decided to go with the local community collage
here. When I called ITT to withdrawal I was told that I owed them
$13,000 for the time I had spent in class but if I stayed enrolled I
would not owe anything AND it would be covered by the student loans. I
wasn't very intimidated by their tactic and withdrew. Not to long ago I
got a bill from ITT for $11,000 and a week or so after that a call from
a collection agency and then a letter from the same agency.

So how do I handle this? I was lead to believe everything was covered by
loans, signed a lot of paper work for it (online) yet never received
anything in the mail and in the end they claim the loan was never final
and hit me with a bill for $11,000. At the very least that has to be
misrepresentation. Id like to do something about this!

To be honest, you should of been reading what you were signing or at least what the FA was doing on your behalf. They obviously didn't get your students loans approved or it wouldn't of been to a collection agency. Also being honest, I scanned over most item, If i actually read word for word, I wouldn't of joined (or so I think).

The collection agency is called GRC (General Revenue Corp), they are a scam. I been getting calls non-stop for them. They give me a recorded message saying they have information about my loans. I haven't been late on them and I am not in collections. This may be the same from you, just fishing for your info. Unless you got letters and such backing up they are actually in collections.

First I would check your credit report with your free (yes $0, real free) annual check: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

If this was just a normal debt, I would say screw it, the damage to your report is done, just wait it out because it comes of within a few years in most cases unless you give them any reason to update it, if they update it (you telling them anything, or making a payment), you just extended the time another few years.

However, if this is a student government backed loan, I wouldn't blow it off, because the government will hunt you down and garnish your wages. Honestly I would follow the steps outlined here: http://ittakestime.org/index.php?i=withdrawal regarding obtaining your financial aid documents from the school.
If you don't like it, MOD IT!

You are correct, it is GRC. It is not a government backed loan, just a bill from ITT they are collecting for. To tell you the truth Im not worried about paying them at all. $11,000 is nothing after getting injured, losing your job because you are no longer able to do it, house getting foreclosed, car reposed, and being hungry. My problem is the unethical behavior they have and BS they pull. Yes, I should have read everything I was signing, I totally agree. But I was also told everything for my financial aid was complete, am not an expert on the process, am relying on their people to keep me informed, and was lied to. I was attending classes into the 3rd quarter without financing! Here at the local collage you have 2 days to pay for the classes you register for or you are automatically dropped from them. Its that simple, if you have paid THEN you can go.

Thank you for relying by the way!
