The report, citing U.S. Department of Education data, noted that 96 percent of students who graduated from for-profit institutions took out student loans. And in many cases, students accumulated a ton of debt -- 24 percent of those 2008 grads had federal loans totaling more than $40,000.

In 2009, students at these schools received $4 billion in Pell Grants and $20 billion in federally backed loans. And more than a quarter of these “proprietary institutions” – the industry prefers a label less mercenary than “for-profit – count on federally funded financial aid for 80 percent of their revenues.
