Publicly traded ITT Educational Services, which operates 106 technical institutes in 37 states, reported that it has entered into an agreement to buy Daniel Webster College. Daniel Webster currently serves about 1,200 students on its 52-acre campus in Nashua, NH and at an additional location in Portsmouth, NH. ITT has 65,000 students. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Daniel Webster College, which is regionally accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, offers professional and technology-based programs of study at the associate, baccalaureate, and master degree levels both in residence and through distance education.

The deal is expected to occur in early July 2009. ITT Chairman and CEO Kevin Modany has previously said his company expected to open between six and eight new locations during the year.

Title: Your Taxes Support For-Profits as They Buy Colleges (Update3)

[Just a related article to support the first. Horrific and interesting, but I'm not sure the information below will actually deter people from enrolling in ITT.]

“Companies are buying accreditation,” said Kevin Kinser, an associate professor at the State University of New York at Albany, who studies for-profit higher education. “You can get accreditation a lot of ways, but all of the others take time. They don’t have time. They want to boost enrollment 100 percent in two years.”

The only real students attending ITT Tech are the ones that shouldn't be there.

[More on for-profit education versus public education. Students protesting (indirectly) against ITT Tech. Audio file is included in the article.]

The demonstrators pointed to Blum Capital’s ties to companies such as Career Education Corp. and ITT Tech to explain what they see as the UC leaders’ quest to privatize higher education. Shortly after the decision was made to raise student fees by 32 percent, Blum Capital Partners rushed to purchase even more ITT stock, the protesters said.
