The reality of it is, in my situation at least, I went into ITT already knowing how to program, graphic design, web design, and edit video. I was having a really hard time getting jobs in this field since I didn't really have proof that I knew how to do these things. Once I went to ITT I got my first video editing job and once I graduated I was able to freelance for 4 years after companies saw my resume as well as getting hired full time afterwords.
My situation is a little bit different though in the fact that I went in already knowing the stuff, and I already had a great portfolio of work to show for it.
Smarter companies will look at your degree and not immediately believe you know everything about the subject, but it shows them that you can be committed to a certain project until it's completion. Same thing goes for having a high school degree. It's not always about what you learned there, but more the fact that you have the determination to learn new things and complete something you've began.
First thing I get asked about ITT is if I liked it there and if I learned anything while attending. Every company owner I've been honest with about the school already know the situation but like that I stuck with it and that I took the time to learn the subjects I wanted to know about on my own by doing the research I needed to get the job done.
With all of that said, there are a lot of people out there who don't learn the way I do and if you're paying that much money to have someone teach it to you, you better damn well get taught. Unfortunately, that's not what's happening here and a lot of people are getting screwed over. Zeitgeist or not, there's gotta be something that can be done about all of this. Most people just don't want to spend their whole life chasing down justice and end up biting the bullet and dealing with it by not doing anything at all.
