Get what you Put in

Get what you Put in

Hey Forum,

Just wanted to give a more positive outlook on the ITT disappointment. I have already graduated with CNS degree from ITT and vowed never to return because of the ridiculousness of it all. But considering my credits will not transfer to another institution I have decided to return to ITT to finish my Bach in ISS.

Before you judge me let me tell you what I have learned over the last few years... I have been to CCNA classes, etc and learned alot about subnetting etc that ITT never even touched. I have landed a job as a Network Administrator for about 4 years now. Talking with my friends who attained degrees from traditional 4 yr colleges, there is a huge difference in the scope of the classes and instructors.

Instead of viewing ITT as a failure, you should realize that all learning institutions could be considered Failures if you only rely on the teachers and academic programing. It is what you make it which becomes your reality. If you could apply yourself more into what it is that interests you then you will be able to leave ITT with a grasp of the field as well as the confidence to land jobs you wouldn't have been able to even apply for before.

Basically what I am saying is ITT sux, but not more or less than any other higher learning institution. It is what you take from the experience that will define you and your future. If you can find ONE thing from ITT that is worth a damn and build on it then all your "money" will not be lost but better considered an investment in yourself. ITT isn't responsible for teaching you everything about IT, they are responsible for giving you tools and guidance to achieve what it is you desire.

It is up to YOU what you take away from ITT, or lack there of..

Please be gentle and don't flame my post to bad because i know there are Alot of ITT Haters out there... trust me I know.

I don't think that it's so much about the entirety of ITT Tech being a money sink. Instead, I think that there are specific aspects (at least at my Campus) that make the usefulness of ITT Tech lack in tremendous ways. For example, my Campus has a couple of *very* good Instructors. They dislike the curriculum just as much as (most of) the students do, so they supplement it with additional stuff that's "outside" of what they're required to do. The only saving grace that this Campus has are the few Instructors like this.

You suggest that it's up to each individual to take from ITT Tech what they will, whether it be good or bad. You're right...to a point. What you have to realize is, while employing the tactics that ITT Tech employs (such as grade inflation), they're actually hurting the future of *everybody*. For the students whose grades are being inflated, they're giving them false hope for their future, making them believe they can do something that they absolutely cannot do. For those of us getting straight A's, they're devaluing our degrees to such a level that most reputable companies want nothing to do with the graduates of ITT Tech.

In short, you do have some valid points. But, you're not considering the actual *tangible* damage that is done. The damage that prevents ITT Tech graduates (yes, even those who really try to learn the industry) from getting *gainful* employment in the field they're seeking when saying that they had anything to do with ITT Technical Institute/Education.

It's not an education. It's a diploma mill. And I, for one, will not let it stand.

Yeah. ITTGrad is trying to make an old, tired argument. Of course one should make the best of ITT or any other mistake, but the "degree" value is the problem. Make the best of your time deciding what school and career path to follow BEFORE painting yourself into a corner!
The only real students attending ITT Tech are the ones that shouldn't be there.

Tools and guidance? We cheated on nearly everything that was above the ability of an average ninth grader!!! (I am being generous.) The teachers refused to teach! Nearly the only thing I was given in most classes was the answers to the "tests" and "quizzes."

I was guided into life long debt.

I have so much hate in my heart. Oh well.
They hurt me. They hurt my family. And I am not the only one. They are obviously breaking the law. I don't understand why the government keeps giving them money. Most people that attend these schools end up worse off than when they enrolled. "Everybody" knows it and many just ridicule us for being too stupid to know any better. I wonder if that is the mindset of the powers-that-be.

I spend a lot of time thinking about my victimization at the hands of ITT Tech. Mostly about how I no longer have any hopes of getting an education or ever having any credit. Forgive me for being worldly, but those things were very important to me and I have had a hard time finding reasons to get out of bed in the morning and then leaving the house after that. I used to be a very goal oriented person.

Just so you know, you can still be a goal oriented person. Call it revenge, call it vengeance, call it whatever you like. Your goal can be getting back at the entity that caused you such harm. Fight back. Every little bit helps. Anonymous letters, full blown media interviews..everything helps. If not for yourself, then for the unwitting many that will still fall victim to the unethical practices of such an entity.

Remember guys, this is still the United States of America. We still have, at least for now, the freedom of speech. Along with said freedom is the freedom to organize and make our messages known. Use these freedoms while they're available to you. Make the most of them. Random complaints on a message board will only get you so far.

This is the standard line of ITT tech instructors everywhere.

“YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT IN”

I like this article because it’s mostly true. We both agree that ITT tech doesn’t teach anyone anything and both agree that students acquire their job skills of their own time and efforts. So, why then does ITT tech charge such a handsome tuition fee? Is it the foreign instructors having trouble mastering the English language? Is it the NIT books from India, lacking the ISBN numbers? Is it the wasting of time in the half cooked, half baked labs with incorrect and wrong examples? Where does the money go ITTGrad???? ITT tech is a good school but their tuition rates are garbage and unethical. Why do you think the Obama administration is scrutinizing these types of schools? Why do they have so many loan defaults? The list goes on and on.

The ITT Tech business model is to enroll as many students as possible; then obtain as many student loans as possible. They are not concerned with the quality of education they are providing or who they are enrolling. That is when they roll out their favorite line, “YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT IN.”

I also like this article because you illustrate the ideal student for ITT tech. You are obviously a power student, already employed, already successful. You already understand half of the course curriculum before you even set foot in the classroom. But that is not what is going on for many of the other enrolled students. ITT tech has marketed them a pipe dream. They swallowed it hook, line and sinker. These students do not understand implicit denial and have trouble with a command line. Those students should not be attending ITT Tech or ITT Tech needs to back off their bogus tuition rates. The only students that should be attending ITT tech are power students like yourself. When I attended ITT Tech, the students that came with the most education, left with the most education as well as the best job prospects. But don’t worry ITTGrad, ITT Tech still loves you even more. They will market your success, your drive, your passion, your hard work, your subnetting, as something that was wholly taught at their school and provided by them. They will hitch their wagon to your success story and take credit for everything you have done. That bothers me; there is something wrong with that. Students that don’t match your profile should not attend ITT Tech under any circumstances. See my post, “DON’T ENROLL IN CNS UNTIL YOU READ THIS.” The ITT Tech statement “YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT IN” is founded on pigeon shit. It can be applied to anything. It can be applied to non-enrolled, would be students studying networking or anything else. At least those students have books from Microsoft Press versus NIT. The average student will not learn anything from ITT that he would not learn from Trainsignal and for a lot less. The only students that should attend ITT are students that already have a job in IT. You will already know many things and the administration and instructors will love you for it because that means less work for them.

Let’s give ITTGrad some credit at least he didn’t come in here with “INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL.”
